STEERING THROUGH IT

Introduction + Chapter 1

McLaughlin shares her journey of facing a life-threatening illness with sensitivity and insight, never losing sight of the reader who will be reading her story to gain understanding and support. While her story is one of courageously surviving a life-threatening illness, McLaughlin eloquently and with genuine grace shows us that it is possible to do things you never imagined you could do, face difficulties you never imagined you could face. This is a book that is more than a story of surviving illness - it is a story of living life.
— Dr. Diane Pomerantz
Lynn McLaughlin’s memoir, Steering Through It is a must-read for all new and seasoned healthcare practitioners. Lynn and her family’s reflections on her life-threatening diagnosis and journey within the healthcare system provides clinicians with insight into the difficulties patients face navigating the course of their disease and how impactful our interactions with them are during those difficult times. Lynn’s narrative will inspire Doctors, Nurses and all healthcare practitioners to see their patients in a different “light” suggesting that we listen closely to them, we take the time to learn about their “Story” and to understand that they are not only a patient but a beloved mother, a sister, daughter and friend. It’s then when we understand this that we can provide the holistic care that every person deserves during their most difficult times in life.

An amazing story of determined survival. Your narrative made me feel I was right there with you when you went through the diagnosis, the surgery and your recovery. I was particularly immersed in the pages where you described how your brain basically took on a mind of its own, so to speak. I felt your struggles and frustration as you fought your way back from such a debilitating situation.

You did a great job incorporating the different voices throughout the book – your sister and father’s point of view besides your own. It highlighted the different ways people react to the same situation. I also liked the analogy you used with sailing. Your experience with the brain tumor truly was like sailing through a storm, and you survived it to make it back to shore. Your cover was very good. It relayed what your story is about beautifully. Many covers don’t do that, but yours did. Your writing was immediate, succinct and drew me in immediately.
